SUSSURRI.

Mary Ellen Carroll, Andy Coolquitt, Phoebe Lickwar

November 7, 2024 — January 7, 2025
Opening: Thursday, November 7, 2024 from 6 until 8 pm

Paggi House is pleased to announce the exhibition SUSSURRI featuring works by Mary Ellen Carroll, Andy Coolquitt, and Phoebe Lickwar. The artworks are unified through infrastructure that it is both located within, and occurring as nature. Taking the form of painting, sculpture, and photography, they focus on materiality and its implied ability to perform, leading to a sound or effect known as “sussurri.” The translation into Greek appears as psythis, and is the effect as in the sound of the wind blowing through trees, as a whisper. This sound is also described as existing between noise and music, symbolizing the space between disquiet and composure, improvisation and composition, and chaos and cultivation.

The exhibition SUSSURRI will feature curatorial contributions and an essay by Ruth Noack, the noted art historian and curator.

Paggi House and the Roots Imperative are initiatives of the Loren Group,
and Penny Aaron is the cultural advisor for our programs.

The striking power and beauty of nature is to be shared as is the responsibility to protect and preserve it for our future.

The ROOTS Imperative

Taking climate action today to make a difference in all of our tomorrows.

The Roots Imperative, is a non-profit organization that is undertaking action and research through a number of initiatives in the built environment and through forestation. The research supported by the Roots Imperative and undertaken by prominent scientists at the University of Texas and the Lady Bird Johnson Wildlife Center has helped guide the vision and define our goal: to acquire and regenerate over 50,000 biodiverse acres of land and plant 10 million hardwood trees—trees that will consume at least ten times the carbon dioxide we produce and enable us to give back more than we take from the world.

We think it is better to get started now with concrete, actionable solutions, in parallel to the ongoing analysis of theoretical innovation. We commissioned University of Texas (UT) to undertake research which has underpinned all the assumptions used in developing the Roots plan. Our independent research supports these numbers and suggests the relevance of our involvement in the land sinks (to a lesser extent Land Use), and Construction solutions would be significant. Reforestation needs minimal new technology, is cost efficient, and can begin today.

There are many other benefits to reforestation other than the carbon capture. We are directly rebuilding habitats that improve environmental conditions, support biodiversity, improve ground conditions and structure, and return land to its original state. The Roots Imperative will initially achieve 5MM tons of CO2e[2] capture through 20,000 acres of biodiverse reforestation over 10 years and is targeted to extract 50MM to 100MM tons of carbon by 2050. We further aim to provide the template for many more global and regional climate action programs for the hospitality industry, with emphasis on carbon capture through reforestation.

Support the ROOTS Imperative

SUSSURRI — a unique silkscreen edition has been created by Mary Ellen Carroll / MEC, studios in collaboration with VIER5, the award winning international design firm and its founder Marco Fiedler. The edition is produced by BrandX Editions. Each of the works are unique and this is attributed to how the base layer in the silkscreen process was produced by using an improvisational technique. 100% of the proceeds from the sale of SUSSURRI will support the research and reforestation work for the ROOTS Imperative.
